Chapter 14

Tristan walked out onto Leverton’s back lawn and immediately his eyes found Phoebe. Her head was tipped towards Amelia Moore’s and the two of them giggled as though they’d been friends all their life and not just the half an hour of their acquaintance. She could brighten any gathering, just her presence.

“Ah,” Philip said, limping towards Tristan with his cane. “I heard you were here.”

Tristan pulled his eyes from Phoebe to Philip and smiled at his friend. “My sister is begging for Amelia’s and Phoebe’s company in your blue parlor. Clayworth says she can entertain them there if she’ll sit still.”

Philip’s brow rose in amusement. “And she agreed to that?”

“Well, it was that or remain in her bed all day.”

Philip nodded. “I can see why she took that deal then.” His attention turned back to the crowd assembled on his lawn. “Did Russ come with you?”

Tristan snorted. “No. He tasked me with seeing to Miss Greywood today while he engages in his own entertainments.”

Philip tilted his head towards Tristan. “Blackmailing you with something?”

“He’s treated her so shabbily, I didn’t put up much of a fight.” His eyes once again sought out Phoebe. The sun made her hair shimmer with red and gold, and the breeze slightly lifted her tendrils from her face. What he wouldn’t do to run his hands through her silken tresses.

“You always were the noblest of the Averys.”

Hardly that. Tristan shrugged. “I don’t have a lot of competition for that title, do I?” After all, Russell was a scoundrel of the first order and Greg had hardly been honorable throughout most of his life.

“You’re one of the most noble men I know,” Philip protested.

But a noble man wouldn’t lust after his brother’s fiancé. A noble man wouldn’t have fallen in love with his brother’s fiancé. Tristan was far from noble. “I’m sure I’m rotten to my Avery core just like my brothers.” Then before his friend could ask him to explain that comment, Tristan said, “Excuse me, will you?” and crossed the lawn to where Phoebe and Amelia were still conversing.

Upon his approach, Phoebe looked up. Her blue eyes met his gaze, making his breath catch in his throat. She seemed to catch hers at the same time, and for the briefest of moments, Tristan wondered if it was possible that she could ever feel for him the way he did for her.

“Lieutenant.” Phoebe smiled, which was rarely the case when she looked at him, and he felt it all the way to his soul.

“Miss Greywood, Mrs. Moore.” He nodded his head in greeting. “My sister is begging for your company in the blue parlor.”

“Oh!” Phoebe’s face brightened even more. “Thank you.”

Amelia linked her arm through Phoebe’s and grinned at Tristan. “I’m certain you found her well.”

“Well enough.”

“Meaning Clayworth was vexing her?”

Tristan shook his head. “I dare say, Amelia, you will find Philip even more vexing when you are in a similar state.”

A slight blush stained the blonde’s cheeks. “Well, I hope so.” Then she tugged Phoebe back towards the manor house, the two of them giggling like the silliest of schoolgirls.
